Probation Dept. begins 'Thinking for a Change' Rehabilitation Program

Elmira, NY – Currently in Chemung County, there are 850 adults on probation. The Chemung County Probation Department is using a new program designed to keep criminals from habitual incarceration. It’s called Thinking for a Change or T4C.

Thinking for a Change (T4C) is a nationally-recognized program that was designed by professionals in the fields of sociology and criminal justice to drastically reduce the risk of the participants’ recidivism. Thinking for a Changes is a behavioral program developed to motivate its member to participate in their own learning and take responsibility. Some of the program’s lessons teach social skills, the cognitive self-change process and teach problem solving skills.

For the past 14 weeks two Chemung County Probation Officers having been teaching the curriculum twice a week. Last week nine people graduated from the program.

“I would not be able to do this job if I did not have hope that people have the ability to change and I feel our nine graduates have learned many skills they can utilize to make change,” says Chemung County Probation Officer and Thinking for a Change Facilitator, Whitney Palme.

“We have seen personal growth in all class participants and I look forward to hearing how the skills they learned are continuously applied in their personal lives,” says Chemung County Probation Officer and Thinking for a Change Facilitator, Lindsay Callas.
