Big Flats – The Chemung County Youth Bureau has received a Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society (GVRPS) Special Event Award for their 2015 inaugural Skate with Santa event. The award will be presented at the GVRPS Annual Conference on November 18, 2016 which will be held in Rochester, NY.
On November 27, 2015, the Chemung County Youth Bureau partnered with First Arena to develop the FREE family-friendly Skate with Santa event, which occurred immediately after Community Bank’s Elmira Downtown Holiday Parade. In further collaboration, the three agencies coordinated their media efforts with Elmira Downtown Development’s Tree Lighting Ceremony to present a cohesive holiday experience for the residents of Downtown Elmira and surrounding counties. Skate with Santa was a tremendously successful event drawing in hundreds of families to the First Arena. Participants were provided the use of skates, hot chocolate, pictures with Santa, and a holiday activity bag that included an Elmira Jackals hockey ticket, all free of charge. Overall, the event provided a wonderful enchantment to the existing Downtown Elmira Parade tradition that would not have been possible without the collaboration of all four organizations.
Due to last year’s success, on Friday, November 25th, 2016 from 11:00am to 1:00pm Skate with Santa will expand to be even bigger and better. Skating has moved from the recreational rink to the main ice rink, free pictures with Santa, free face painting for all youth, along with a free holiday craft, and hot chocolate courtesy of the Chemung County Youth Bureau. Holiday characters and a winter selfie station will round out this FREE event kicking off the Holiday Season with a festive feel.
