Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network presents 12th Annual Breastfeeding Friendly Place Awards



ELMIRA – The 12th annual Breastfeeding Friendly Awards took place on Thursday, Aug. 3 at Wisner Park. The Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network (TTBN) recognized 31 workplaces, public places, and members within the community that make an extra effort to accommodate the needs of breastfeeding mothers by offering a positive attitude and supportive environment.  


Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and Elmira Mayor Daniel Mandell issued proclamations designating the week of August 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week in Chemung County and the City of Elmira.


“Awardees have supported moms in many ways including providing encouragement and support, making it easy for them to continue nursing their infants by maintaining policies that accommodate breastfeeding moms, offering flexible schedules and providing private spaces for feeding and pumping milk,” says, Chemung County Health Department Registered Nurse, Pat Tremaine. 


The Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network (TTBN) strives to increase breastfeeding rates throughout Chemung County.  TTBN has several activities promoting and raising awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding including the Breastfeeding Friendly Awards, a Community Baby Shower, and ongoing monthly Baby Bistros to support breastfeeding moms and their families. 


The Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network is a collaboration consisting of representatives from many local agencies including Arnot Health, Chemung County Health Department, C.I.D.S., Mothers & Babies Perinatl Network, Southern Tier Pediatrics, and the WIC program and Schuyler County Public Health Dept. among others. Their common goal is to improve the rates of initiation and duration of breastfeeding among women in the Twin Tiers through support, education, and referrals. They have been operating for almost 20 years and meet once a month at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  The group welcomes anyone interested in becoming a member.



Awardees include: Holly Hounds, Bethany Hammond of Hypno Birth Services, Julie Hodge of St. Joseph’s Hospital, World Kitchen, Corning, NY (they are donating $1,000 to upgrade their Lactation Room), Members of the WIC Office; Katrina Gleason a WIC Nutritionist, Tahesion Tulachanh WIC Peer Counselor, Jessica Emanuel WIC Peer Counselor, Susan Falank WIC Peer Counselor, Stacey Magaw, Elmira Chamber of Commerce, Dandy Mart on Wygant Rd in Horseheads, The Steele Memorial Library, Joan Ostrander and the volunteers at the Horseheads Family Resource Center, Montour Falls Library, My Place –A Play and Learning Center, Schuyler County Public Health Department;  Janel Walker RN and Marcia Kasprzyk Schuyler County Health Director, Mendy Thorsland CLC Schuyler County, Jenn Witt with Birth and Beyond, McDonald’s on Cedar St. in Elmira ( Mel), Learned-Reiley-Learned & Hughes Law Office, St. Joseph’s Environmental Services, Cohen Elementary School, Pebbles Calderon-Moore, Renee McCann IBCLC Arnot Hospital, Dresser Rand (Julie Williams), Horigan’s Tavern ( Katherine Boland), Healthy Families Chemung County ( Mary Bednarek), Vanessa McKeon CLC Schuyler County, Autumn White CLC Schuyler County and Shawn Tubridy of Healthy Families Schuyler County.
