SPOT Summer Program Students Clean Out Local Community Gardens

ELMIRA – Dozens of students in the Chemung County Youth Bureau SPOT Summer Program spent Monday afternoon cleaning out local gardens. As part of the programs’ community service project, 35 participants helped spruce up local community gardens by pulling weeds and tending to the gardens. The sites included the gardens at Quatrano Park (behind the Arc of Chemung),  EOP, Woodlawn and the Near Westside Garden.

Each year, the SPOT Summer Program park sites (Chapel Park, Grove Park, and Pulaski Park) participate in a community service project. In previous years, the program has cleaned up parks throughout Chemung County, cleaning up trash, cigarette butts, etc.

“The youth did a great job tending to the gardens even though the weather was hot,” says Youth Program Assistant, Cali Stewart.  Upon completion of the community service project, the youth’s attendance, and behavior in the program, they are eligible for our yearly trip to Darien Lake next week.

SPOT Summer is a free, supervised, drop-in summer recreational program that takes place in Chapel Park, Grove Park, & Pulaski Park. Participants are between the ages of 12-15 and reside in Chemung County.  The program operates Monday through Friday from noon until 5:00 PM.
