Volunteer Fire Companies to Graduate 24 Firefighters”

Elmira Heights- The Chemung County Fire Advisory Board will hold a graduation ceremony for 24 graduates of the Spring and Fall 2016 Classes of the Firefighter 1 training program tomorrow, Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Thomas Edison High School auditorium beginning at 7:00 pm. The training program was offered by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services through the Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The graduates of this program represent thirteen local volunteer fire companies from Chemung, Steuben, and Tioga counties.  They will now become probationary firefighters in those departments.

Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and Mark Cicora, Chemung County Fire Coordinator will join the department’s Fire Chiefs in conferring the diplomas to the graduates.

The Spring and Fall 2016 graduates includes: Benjamin T. Fesetch and Tyler D. Mattison from the Big Flats Fire Department;  Everett E. Payne from the Breesport F.D.; Christopher M. Apgar from Community Fire & Rescue; Timothy M. Fowler and Timothy S. Storace from the Caton F.D.; Matthew C. LaRock and Bobby C. Martin from the Chemung F.D.; Christopher Johnston from the East Hill F.D.; Yhon A. Salvatierra from the Elmira Heights F.D.; Brandon D. Morgan from the Erin F.D.; Teddy N. Burrows, Curt A. Gustafson, and Christopher J. Rocchi from the Pine City F.D.; David A. Mangion from the South Corning F.D.; Hunter M. Allington, Bridgett L. Gilly, and Alexander J. Morgan from the Southport F.D.; Zachary T. Gustin, Kaden E. Laird, and Emily J. Zine from the Town & Country F. D.; Emily S. Stansfield from the Waverly /Barton F.D.; and Michael T. Ball and Joseph P. Shaw Jr. from the West Elmira F.D..

The Firefighter 1 class is offered twice per year and is instructed by NYS Fire Instructors of which we currently have four in Chemung County.  The 104-hour training was held at the Big Flats and Elmira Heights FD’s with hands-on training taking place at the County Fire Training Facility in the Lattabrook Industrial Park. The training includes hazardous material operations level training as well as National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training.  Classes are held two nights per week over a four month period.
