Get Smart: How to Protect Yourself from Scams, Identity Theft and Fraud

The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care will hold its Annual Public Hearing on Wednesday, September 13th, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at New Beginning United Methodist Church, 300 E. Miller St., Elmira.  The theme for this year’s Public Hearing is “Get Smart: How to Protect Yourself from Scams, Identity Theft and Fraud”.  Each year thousands of older adults are victims of financial scams and abuse. The impact on victims, their families and communities is devastating. Participants will find out how they and their loved ones can identify scams and avoid being a victim.

LIFESPAN Scam Prevention Coordinator, Leita King, will present “Become an Empowered Older Adult: Scams, Identity Theft and Fraud Education”.  A panel of experts from the Sheriff’s Department, a financial institution, Adult Protective Services, and Attorney John Maloney will discuss the legal responses to financial exploitation, including:

- Why reporting scams and fraud is important and how to protect yourself from further exploitation

- The financial institution’s responsibility to report fraud and financial exploitation and how members are protected

- Adult Protective Services and its role in investigating elder abuse and financial exploitation

- Power of Attorney roles and responsibilities, self-determination and capacity

Age-Friendly Chemung County will present awards to the newest Age-Friendly Businesses and Organizations. Chemung County Department of Aging and NY Connects staff will be available to share information about our services and supports, including eligibility screenings and application assistance for Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage. AARP Local Chapter #276 will also have information available. Refreshments will be provided.

Opportunity will be provided for participants to share ideas, questions and concerns regarding needs and services for older adults, people of all ages in need of long term care services and supports, and their families and caregivers.
