"Chemung County Human Relations Commission continues the legacy of promoting values of diversity and equal opportunity within the workplace and the community: New Human Relations Coordinator hired"

ELMIRA- The Chemung County Human Relations Commission, which operates via a contract with the YWCA Elmira & the Twin Tiers, has selected Gail Walker to coordinate education, advocacy, and public outreach activities that will foster the recognition and elimination of discrimination in our local communities.

Ms. Walker brings over twenty years of experience in human services, human resources, and human relations to the challenge of education, advocacy, and public outreach furthering Human Rights. Her previous Human Rights Specialist appointment with New York State Division of Human Rights (NYSDHR), uniquely qualifies her to assist those who wish to exercise their rights, whether they choose to resolve an issue directly, or take State/Federal legal action by filing a claim. The Chemung County Human Relations Commission operates voluntarily in addition to services afforded through NYSDHR Regional Offices, providing community members, including employers and housing providers, local access to resources.

The role of the Coordinator is to offer education and consultation regarding questions of rights, disputes, alleged violation of anti-discrimination laws which provide protection in the areas of employment, housing, credit, public accommodation, and public, non-sectarian educational institutions. Individual protections exist under State and Federal Laws for equal treatment regardless of race, color, creed, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, national origin, and in employment and licensing with regard to prior arrest and conviction.

Assistance is available during regular walk-in hours on Mon, Wed, and Fri from 10:00 – 2:00 PM, or anytime by appointment.
