“Road Project Work Announced”

Chemung County - The Chemung County Department of Public Works is pleased to announce the start of three highway improvement projects.

Work to improve CR3 (Wyncoop Creek Road) will begin on Monday, August 8, 2011.  The extent of the project is from CR23 Mallory Road to CR22 Hogback Road located in the Town of Chemung. This maintenance work will consist of milling the existing pavement (removing 2-inches), and replacing with 2-inches of new asphalt.  The repaving of CR3 will begin Monday, August 16, 2011, and should take four days.  With proper maintenance, this project will add 10 years to the life of the road.

Work to improve CR33 (West Hill Road) will begin on Wednesday, August 10, 2011.  The extent of the project is from Hoffman Street to CR55 (Harris Hill Road) in the Towns of Elmira and Big Flats.  A small section of CR55, from CR33 to Northcrest Road, will also be overlaid.  This rehabilitation project will consist of removal of the existing asphalt and reuse of the asphalt millings in an improved sub-base.  Beginning on or before August 17, 2011, the roadway will be repaved with 3-inches of asphalt binder, and will be surface coated with an oil & stone seal.  The binder and oil & stone operations should take 1-2 weeks.  With proper maintenance, this project will add 15 years to the life of the road.

Work to replace the CR3 (Wyncoop Creek Road) Bridge over Wyncoop Creek (between Rowley Road and Braybrook Road) in the Town of Chemung will begin on or about August 10, 2011.  A signalized, on-site temporary bridge will be in place for the duration of the project.  This project is expected to last two or three months.  The bridge should be reopened prior to winter.

As always, schedules are dependent on weather and equipment availability.  The roadways will remain open during the construction, but please expect delays due to lane closures.  Flaggers will be on site to guide traffic through the road work-zones.  The bridge project utilizes an on-site temporary bridge.

Please drive carefully to protect our workers, other motorists, and yourself.

Anyone having questions about these projects should contact the Public Works Department at 739-3896.
