“County Volunteer Fire Companies Graduate 22 Firefighters”

Elmira Heights- The Chemung County Fire Advisory Board will hold a graduation ceremony for 22 graduates of the Fall 2008 Firefighter 1 training program tonight, Friday, January 30, 2009 at the Thomas Edison High School Auditorium beginning at 6:00 pm. The graduation ceremony was originally scheduled for December 12, 2008 and was postponed due to weather. The training program was offered by the New York State Department of State through the Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The graduates of this program represent eight local volunteer fire companies and will now become probationary firefighters in those departments.

Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and Tom Pesesky, Deputy Director of Chemung County Fire and Emergency Management will join State Fire Instructor Robert Emmick in conferring the diplomas to the graduates.

The Fall 2008 graduating class includes: Chuck Amrine, Robert Buchanan, Sean Detoda, Anthony Giorgio, Charles Keller, Jenniffer Perry, James Schiavone, and Joseph Young from the Big Flats Fire Department; Roxanne Hodge and Scott Karlen from the Elmira Heights Fire Department; Zachary Ziegenhagen from the Golden Glow Fire Department; Matthew Cranmer from the Millport Fire Department; Robert Baldwin, Steven Hydzik, Christopher Jack, and Daniel Nybeck from the Southport Fire Department; Corey Bernas and Timothy VonBevern from the Town & Country Fire Department; John Barton, John Horyczun and Kevin Jones from the Van Etten Fire Department and Adrienne Moore from the Wellsburg Fire Department.

The Firefighter 1 class is offered twice per year and is instructed by NYS Fire Instructors of which we have four in Chemung County.  The 91-hour training was held at the Elmira Heights Fire Station with hands-on training taking place at the County Fire Training Facility in the Lattabrook Industrial Park. The training includes hazardous material operations level training as well as National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training.  Classes are held two nights per week over a four month period.

Individuals interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter can contact the Chemung County Fire and Emergency Management Office at (607) 737-2096 or their local fire department.  The next Firefighter 1 class will be held in the Spring of 2009.
