Friday, September 22, 2017
ELMIRA - Three businesses and one not-for-profit organization were recently designated Age-Friendly by the Chemung County Age-Friendly Community Coalition: Economic Opportunity Program; Namasté Event, Spa & Wellness Center; Southern Tier Health Care Credit and Turtle Leaf Cafe. The Age-Friendly Business and Organization Designation Program began in 2016 and thirty-four businesses and organizations have been designated age-friendly.
Age-Friendly Chemung County, a coalition-backed initiative that promotes healthy and active living for people of all ages, is currently accepting applications for the next round of Age-Friendly Business and Organization Designation Awards. The program aims to identify and recognize businesses and organizations that provide easy-to-navigate, respectful and effective services to people of all ages. Businesses and organizations must meet certain criteria to receive designation. Only businesses located or providing services in Chemung County are eligible to apply.
During the application process, businesses and organizations self-identify their age-friendly characteristics. Applicants then receive an on-site review from representatives of the Age-Friendly Chemung County Coalition.
An Age-Friendly designation can be used as a marketing tool to attract and retain customers and clients, especially older adults. Businesses and organizations that are designated will receive decals for marketing purposes, and recognition on the Age-Friendly Chemung County website and Facebook page. Designees will be recognized at the Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care Older Americans Month Celebration on May 7, 2018. The deadline to apply is February 28. The Age-Friendly Chemung County Community Action Plan was developed by a coalition of citizens, organizations, businesses and municipal agencies. The coalition continues to oversee implementation of the plan, which addresses outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.
In December 2012, Chemung County became the first upstate New York community to be admitted into the World Health Organization Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
