"Chemung County Updates Health Priorities"

Elmira- The Chemung County Health Department, Arnot Health, and the Health Priorities Partnership have updated their Community Health Assessment (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) to address the health priorities of our community.

Chemung County chose to focus on the following priorities and area of disparity:
Priority Area 1:  Prevent Chronic Diseases by reducing illness, disability,
and death related to hypertension, tobacco use and second hand smoke, and
     obesity in adults and children.
Priority Area 2:  Promote Mental Health and Prevent Substance Abuse by
working to prevent non-medical prescription opioid use and overdose.
Chemung County also chose to address the following disparity:
Under the Prevent Chronic Disease priority area, Chemung County will work
on decreasing the percentage of low income individuals who use tobacco.

This update included examining current data, conducting focus groups throughout the community, seeking input from local providers and stakeholders, and soliciting the opinions of the public.  The process was facilitated by the S2AY Rural Health Network.

The Health Priorities Partnership, a multi-disciplinary group of community organizations, will work together to address these health priorities.  All are welcome at Health Priorities Partnership meetings to help work on improving the health of our community. The next meeting is February 14, 2017.  Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every other month at 9:30 am at the Chemung County Health Department.  Please call 607-737-2856 for more information.

The updated CHA/CHIP can be found on the Chemung County Health Department website http://www.chemungcountyhealth.org/prevention-agenda or on Arnot Health’s website at www.arnothealth.org

These efforts help further the mission of the Chemung County Health Department which is to:
     • Promote and respond to our community's health needs,
     • Demonstrate teamwork through open communication, support, respect and
     accountability and
     • Provide efficient, courteous, professional service fairly and consistently.

We encourage community members to attend the meetings and become part of our efforts to improve the health of our residents.
