Tuesday, November 29, 2016
Elmira - In observance of World AIDS Day on Thursday, December 1st, the Chemung County AIDS Task Force has scheduled a Candle Light Vigil beginning at 5:30 pm at Wisner Park in downtown Elmira.
This year's events include a proclamation from Mayor Dan Mandell, and County Executive, Tom Santulli, a reading of the names of local HIV-positive individuals who have died, a candlelight vigil, and a march from Wisner Park to the Steele Memorial Library of the Chemung County Library District.
Events at the Steele Memorial Library begin at 6:00 pm with refreshments and viewing of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The Quilt will be on display at the library from 11/28 through December 3rd. Educational information will be available and brief remarks will occur at the Library. Live music will be provided by Andy G. Fagan. All events are free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to wear red and download the Red Candle or similar app in lieu of candles a small number of which will be provided.
A Quilt panel will also be on display upstairs at the Clemens Center. Elmira College has also agreed to display a panel of the Quilt. It will be on display all week in the College Campus Center in the east stairwell.
The theme of World AIDS Day is “Leadership. Commitment. Impact.” Our goal continues to be bringing an end to the AIDS epidemic in New York State. We want to reduce the number of new HIV infections to just 750 (from an estimated 3,000) by 2020 and achieve the first ever decrease in HIV prevalence in New York State.
Ending the Epidemic in New York State will maximize the availability of life-saving, transmission interrupting treatment for HIV, saving lives and improving the health of New Yorkers. It will move New York from a history of having the worst HIV epidemic in the country to a future where new infections are rare and those living with the disease have normal lifespans with few complications.
The Chemung County AIDS Task Force is composed of representatives from Arnot Health Ivy Clinic, Elmira City School District, Planned Parenthood, Southern Tier AIDS Program, Trinity of Chemung County, Elmira College, Chemung County Health Dept., Family Services, and community volunteers. Their ongoing mission is to educate our community about HIV/AIDS.
While all of the Task Force's World AIDS Day events are free and open to the public, donations to the Task Force to cover the costs to rent the quilt for display will be gratefully accepted. They should be made payable to Family Services – Aids Task Force. The Task Force wishes to thank the City of Elmira, Chemung County Library District, Elmira College, the Clemens Center, Island Care Pharmacy, Sweet-N-Saucy, and Andy G. Fagan for their support of this event.
