CCE Chemung Honors Community Members, Adds New Board Members

Elmira- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chemung County (CCE) recently held its annual Friends of Extension Recognition Dinner and Annual Meeting at the Holiday Inn Elmira – Riverview.

Several community members received awards for their support of CCE program areas as well as for the entire organization.  Donna Draxler, Chair of the Chemung County Legislature, accepted the Patricia Cusick Friend of Extension Award.  Named for a former lifetime supporter, this is the top award CCE presents for outstanding support over a number of years.  Other award winners for programmatic support included:  Melinda Howard (Friend of 4-H), Chemung County Youth Advocacy Program (Friend of Nutrition and Local Foods), Michael Bowles (Friend of Natural Resources), Jody Buckley/Buckley’s Automotive (Friend of Chemung Volunteer Action Corps), Mark Watts (Friend of Agriculture), Peg Weidemann (Friend of Horticulture), and Tammy Haskell/WENY-TV (Spirit of Extension).

CCE Executive Director, Andrew Fagan, and Board President Tom Pipher, provided updates on CCE’s activities over the past year and shared the 2016 Annual Report.  “Collectively, CCE Educators provided direct educational programs to over 44,000 Chemung County residents,” Fagan stated.  “They also reached 140,000 individuals through outreach and other indirect efforts.”

Pipher, completing his first year as Board President, mentioned that his personal goals in accepting the Presidency have come to fruition.  “CCE needed to get the word out about its effective programs, and the staff has done a great job this year in increasing our exposure through the local media and through social media,” Pipher explained.  Another goal was to stabilize funding.  “Our 2015 audit remained clean and we’re fortunate to have secured support from the County to enhance our efforts in Agricultural Economic development.”
Senior Administrator, Carol Houssock, was cited for ten years of service while Joseph VerValin was thanked for his year of service as an AmeriCorp VISTA.
Russ Hyde, Rhonda Schweiger, Marcia Metcalfe and Joseph Devita were elected to the Board of Directors.
