“Residents Urged to Clean Storm Sewers”

ELMIRA – With the heavy rain we have received in the past few days and the prediction of rain through Saturday, the Chemung County Office of Fire and Emergency Management is asking residents to clear storm drains near their homes. Urban flooding can occur when areas of poor drainage receive excessive rainfall, or when storm sewers are clogged with debris preventing rain water to properly drain from streets and yards.

Mark Cicora Chemung County Director of Fire and Emergency Management said, “There are currently many areas around the County where we’ve seen storm sewer grates clogged with leaves and debris. We are urging residents to go out and clean off those grates nearest their homes so that they will effectively drain the runoff. Clogged storm sewers are the major cause of urban flooding and can be a real threat.”

In addition, Cicora reminds residents that the river can be extremely dangerous during rain events, with run-offs causing rivers and creeks to rise even after the rains have stopped.  “We are cautioning people just to stay away from the river until the weather has cleared,” added Cicora

Residents are urged to monitor local media outlets and be aware of changing weather conditions. Two very useful tools for keeping abreast of severe weather and other hazards are to purchase and use a NOAA Weather Radio and to sign up for NY Alert, a free service provided by New York State that alerts subscribers to a wide variety of hazards.

Residents can also utilize the Chemung County Emergency Management free mobile app. The app can be downloaded onto your mobile device from Google Play or the Apple App Store . The app title is: Chemung Co. NY Fire/Emergency Management with the app caption ccemo.
