Capabilities Joins Broad Effort to Observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Elmira— Capabilities today announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October. The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme is "Inclusion Works."
"By fostering a culture that embraces individual differences, including disabilities, businesses profit by having a wider variety of tools to confront challenges," said Jennifer Sheehy, deputy assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy. "Our nation's most successful companies proudly make inclusion a core value. They know that inclusion works. It works for workers, it works for employers, it works for opportunity, and it works for innovation."
Reflecting this year's theme, throughout the month, Capabilities will be engaging in a variety of activities to educate community members on disability employment issues and its commitment to an inclusive work culture. On October 5th, Capabilities held a disability inclusion workshop for area employers and non-profits. Attendees learned about disability etiquette to foster inclusion in the workplace, hidden disabilities and accommodations, and incentives for employers. Chemung County Executive Thomas Santulli officially proclaimed October as “National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Chemung County” during the event. A recognition ceremony will be held to honor the area businesses that continue to help in making Capabilities’ vision a reality in late October. Capabilities and local business partners have been working hand in hand to create the opportunities that empower people with disabilities to choose, get, and keep the job of their choice for the past 60 years.
"Capabilities is proud to be a part of this year's National Disability Employment Awareness Month," said Aj Kircher (Executive Director of Capabilities). "We want to spread the important message that we value diverse perspectives, including those of individuals with disabilities."
