Former Director of Fire and Emergency Management, Smith, Named Tri-County First Responder of the Year

The Tri-County First Responder Honor Park Committee is pleased to announce that Michael S. Smith of Southport, NY has been named the 2016 Tri-County First Responder of the Year.

Smith was the Director of the Chemung County Office of Fire and Emergency Management from 1991 through 2014. He is still active as Assistant Chief of the Southport Volunteer Fire Department after more than 45 years service.

He was nominated for this honor by the Directors of Emergency Management Services for Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Counties.

Chief Smith was instrumental in the installation of the Chemung County E911  and  Emergency Medical Dispatch systems. He was a founding member of the NYS 911 Coordinators Association as well as the NYS Association of Emergency Managers.

Countless emergency workers and first responders are better at their jobs because they had Smith as their mentor and teacher.

The Formal presentation of the Award will take place during the Honor and Remembrance Ceremony at the Tri-County First Responder Honor Park on Patriot Day, September 11, 2016 at 11 am. The Park is located at the corner of S. Hamilton Street and Forest Drive in Gang Mills, immediately off the Exit 11 ramp of I-99.
