Elmira- Chemung County joins counties and states across the nation in recognizing the week September 5th through 11th, 2016 as National Suicide Prevention Week. This time is used to promote resources and awareness around the issues of suicide prevention, how you can help others, and how to talk about suicide without increasing the risk of harm.
New York ranks 50th in the nation in its rate of suicide deaths. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in this country, with a life lost every 12 minutes. Firearms account for almost 50% of all suicides. It is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds. It is estimated that five million living Americans have attempted suicide. Suicide touches everyone, but there is help and hope when individuals, communities and professionals join forces to prevent suicide.
In recognition of this preventable public health issue, the Chemung County Department of Mental Hygiene, Suicide Prevention Committee, has planned the following awareness activities.
