“Santulli Proclaims August 1-7, 2016 “World Breastfeeding Week in Chemung County”
Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network presents 10th Annual Breastfeeding Friendly Place Awards

ELMIRA – Chemung County, Arnot Health, and the City of Elmira joined the Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network at a press conference today to celebrate “World Breastfeeding Week” and to present the 2016 Annual Breastfeeding Friendly Place Awards.  The community event took place at the Wisner Park Market.  Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and Elmira Mayor Daniel Mandell issued proclamations designating the week of August 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week in Chemung County and the City of Elmira.

The theme for 2016 World Breastfeeding Week is “Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development” recognizing how breastfeeding is a key element in getting us to think about how to value our wellbeing from the start of life, how to respect each other and care for the world we share.

The Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network recognized 32 workplaces, public places, and members within the community that make an extra effort to accommodate the needs of breastfeeding mothers by offering a positive attitude and supportive environment.  The mission of the Network is to improve the rates of initiation and duration of breastfeeding among women in the Twin Tiers through support, education, and referrals; and to educate, encourage, and empower our community to help breastfeeding mothers.

This year’s recipients were recognized by their nominators for supporting moms who are returning to work and making it easy for them to continue nursing their infants by maintaining policies that accommodate breastfeeding moms, offering flexible schedules, and providing private spaces for feeding and pumping milk.

Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network is open to everyone.  They welcome any interested individuals or organizations to become members to help in their mission to promote breastfeeding.  Donations of any amount are always welcome and appreciated.  The Network meets monthly on the second Wednesday from 12-1pm at the Women’s Health Center 600 Fitch St. 1st Floor Conference Room.  For more information call Pat Tremaine at the Chemung County Health Department at 607-737-2028.
