"Help Chemung County Address Health Priorities"

Elmira - The Chemung County Health Department is in the process of updating their Community Health Assessment (CHA) in order to address the health priorities of our community.  The last time the Health Department did an assessment was in 2013.  The highest scoring issues at that time were tobacco use and obesity.  The Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnership (MAPP) is the strategic process used to identify the serious health issues in the County.

This process is done with the help of hospitals, community organizations, schools, businesses, and most importantly, community members.  This group collaborates as part of the work of the Health Priorities Partnership. They all work together to determine what the most pressing problems in our county are and how to most effectively address them.  This is done by examining current data, conducting focus groups throughout the community, seeking input from local providers and stakeholders, and soliciting the opinions of the public.

To date reams of data has been reviewed, ten focus groups were held, and a meeting of over 30 partners was held to consider the health issues of the county.  After reviewing this input and ranking health issues based on the size and seriousness of the problems, then taking into account the effectiveness of possible solutions including their economic feasibility, acceptability, legality, and available resources the group has come up with a ranked  list of possible priorities.  These are hypertension which includes tobacco use, substance abuse, mental health, obesity, CLRD (COPD), injury prevention, dental health, and teen pregnancy.

At the next Health Priorities Partnership meeting on Thursday, July 14, at 9:30 am at the Health Department we will discuss choosing two priorities to concentrate on going forward.  We will also begin to put together a work plan consisting of strategies to address the chosen priorities.  Local residents are invited to be part of this process and help develop the plan to address the most urgent health needs of our county.

These efforts help further the mission of the Chemung County Health Dept. which is to:
   • Promote and respond to our community's health needs,
   • Demonstrate teamwork through open communication, support, respect and accountability and
   • Provide efficient, courteous, professional service fairly and consistently.

We encourage community members to attend the meeting to be part of the process to identify our needs and become part of our efforts to improve the health of our residents.
