Unite Against Elder Abuse
June 15, 2016 - World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Elmira  - “One Person, One Action, One Nation – United Against Elder Abuse”.  The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care joins communities around the globe in recognizing today, June 15, 2016, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Throughout the world, abuse and neglect of older persons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem.   Many of our elderly neighbors endure suffering every day.  They are the victims of financial exploitation, neglect, and physical or emotional abuse.

“This month, the Department of Aging and LTC is partnering with the Department of Social Services and the wider community to raise awareness about this issue, “ said Director Pamela M. Brown. “ More importantly, we are asking that members of our community partner with us to identify and resolve the challenges of abuse for vulnerable elders.”

Said Brown, “According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, more than one in ten elders may experience some type of abuse, but only one in 23 cases are reported.  This means that very few of those who have been abused get the help they need.  It is up to each and every one of us to do our part in raising awareness. Elder abuse has no limits as to who it affects – it could even one day happen to you.  If you have concerns about the needs of an older person, call us at one of the phone numbers below for a confidential discussion about the help that is available. Everyone can make a difference, but together, we can unite as one nation.  Take a stand against elder abuse!”
