Over 1,500 Chemung County Students Learned Where Food Comes From

Chemung County - Now in its 11th Year, Agricultural Literacy Week has helped to bring agriculturally themed books and resources into thousands of classrooms and libraries throughout New York State.  Organized locally in Chemung County by Cornell Cooperative Extension, the 2016 Agricultural Literacy week was held the week of March 14-18, 2016. This year 17 schools throughout Chemung County participated in the annual event. Each school received several copies of this year’s book by generous donations from Chemung County Farm Bureau, Chemung County Soil & Water Conservation, Chemung County DHIA grant Funding, CCE Chemung, NYS Ag in the Classroom and some very generous individuals and families. With the help of 39 CCE volunteers, staff, and Farm Bureau board members, Ag Literacy week was brought into 78 classrooms (both public and private schools).

This year’s book “The Apple Orchard Riddle” was a fun and exciting story which shares the journey of Mr. Tiffin’s class on a field trip to an apple orchard. The students learn about every aspect of the farm from how apples are harvested, the process of making cider, and the many different varieties of apples. “The Apple Orchard Riddle” and its companion activity was shared with over1,500 Chemung County students grades pre-K-4. This literacy activity helps teachers address learning standards in the following areas: ELA (Language for Literacy Response & Expression), Science (Living Environment, Systems Thinking, and Technology), Career Development (knowledge about different careers), the Arts (Knowing & Using Arts Materials & Resources), and Social Studies (Geography and Economics).

Cornell Cooperative Extension Chemung County is a county-based nonprofit organization affiliated with Cornell University and has been providing educational programs to help improve the quality of life in Chemung County for over 100 years.
